Musical Opinion, May-June 2005

'Admirers of the music of Edward MacDowell...and of piano music of the late 19th-Century...have been waiting for years for a record such as this.  ...this outstanding new SOMM release...will come as something of a revelation...{Sandra Carlock's} exceptional playing, allied to a fine recording made in London, is a disc that is very strongly recommended.'

Gramophone, August 2005

'Such music requires a specially committed pianist and it would be difficult to imagine a more glowing or ardent champion than Sandra Carlock.'

International Piano, July-August 2005

'Sandra Carlock...proves herself a passionate and persuasive advocate for the composer, responding to all the musical challenges with a rare insight.'

'...breathtaking dexterity...'

'The melodic and dazzling Etude de Concert brings the disc to a triumphant end.'

International Record Review, July-August 2005

'I cannot imagine finer or more convincing performances of this music than Carlock's - as an example, try the opening of the third movement in the Suite:  her touch and sense of lyrical line is quite exceptional, and her sense of organic structure in the Sonata's finale is impressive...  She delivers the very difficult Etude de Concert with consummate ease.'

“With some concert musicians, you don’t notice their skills.  They simply take you by the arm and lead you into their magic country.  ‘This,’ they seem to say, ‘is where Beethoven (or whoever) lives and this is what he told me.’  Just such an artist is Miss Sandra Carlock.”—The Petersfield Post

Sandra Carlock’s piano playing projects deep feeling, drama, and excitement, illumined by imagination and intelligence.  Yet her personality and considerable virtuosity remain consistently at the service of communicating a work of art.

Sandra holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, with further graduate work at the Juilliard School of Music.  She has studied with Arthur Dann, Rosina Lhevinne, and Martin Canin.  A prizewinner in the first Emma Feldman Memorial Competition, she was also selected, by competitive audition, for representation by the National Music League, New York City.  Sandra has appeared as recitalist, and as soloist with orchestra throughout the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. She gives frequent master classes and lectures at home and abroad.

Sandra's choice of repertoire reflects variety and scope.  She typically performs on the modern grand piano.  However, her recitals of Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, and Clara Schumann on fully restored instruments of the 19th century are enthusiastically received both in England and America.

Sandra Carlock in Recital was Sandra's debut album, showing her to be an artist of unusual depth and range.  The album is notable in that it was recorded in its entirety in live performance, all tracks appearing here without editing of any kind.

“This is a young woman who not only possesses an awesome amount of musical force but such a natural fluency and expressiveness that she seems almost to be a part of her instrument, much as are the ivories or the strings.”—Peoria Journal Star

“During the magical performance, Carlock coupled her remarkable technical proficiency with an emotional intensity heard all too rarely today in any genre of music.” —The McAlester New Capital
